Staff Editorial: Food options have changed, for better…or for worse?

When students arrived back on campus it was hard not to notice the changes to the dining situation at Duquesne University. In Brottier Hall, a new bubble tea and dessert shop — Yo! Brew — opened up. Students with a meal plan noticed that Hogan not only got a face lift but also got late night dining.

The Residence Hall Association hosted a Town Hall Meeting on Sept. 9, which gave students the chance to voice their “questions, comments, compliments or concerns about your recent experience at Hogan.”

Giving students an open forum to voice their opinions about this facet of student life felt like an improvement in and of itself — Duquesne wants to know how it can improve. They care about what the student body thinks. It’s good to see more recognition of student concerns in a space like that, and as said in previous Staff Editorials, it does not go unnoticed by us.

It seemed as though all was on the up-and-up when it came to nutrition at Duquesne. But milky bubble tea and the ability to get Parkhurst food after hours aside, there are still some things we have a problem with.

Just like it was easy to notice the improvements at Duquesne, it was also easy to see what the students have lost. For example, The Incline no longer has the hours that students became used to these last few years.

It was previously open until 9 p.m., giving students that have classes in the evening a chance to grab dinner. Now, The Incline is open Monday to Friday 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and is now closed Saturday and Sunday. Furthermore, Chick-fil-A is no longer serving breakfast.

As students we recognize that without a meal plan, The Incline might be your better choice, considering the fact that Hogan Dining Hall costs more as an all-you-can-eat option.

It is also too early to tell if the town hall meeting will spark any change. The Duquesne administration may have listened to us, but will they do anything about it?

Here at The Duke we believe that these improvements are a step in the right direction, but still much is left to be desired.

Just to make room for the new dining options, I think many students at Duquesne didn’t realize we had to say goodbye to some of our favorite offerings. Maybe some better nourishment will arrive for us yet.
