Duquesne University’s Student Government Association is less than a month out from electing a new president and executive board.
The new vice president position, vice president of mission and community is now available on the election packets, which are due Feb. 28, for all members choosing to run for either the executive board or a senate position.
Braden Niles, vice president of academic affairs said that he met with Kimberly Hoeritz, Duquesne’s registrar, to discuss some of the changes that are coming with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, coming from the federal level.
“Things have just been really ramping up for the Middle States. I’ve had to do some fact finding,” Niles said. “This is something that the incoming VP of academic affairs will have to work with, so as soon as the elections happen I’d be happy to sit down and talk to whoever that is.”
He said it would be a years-long process, but he is not worried and is ready to pass the torch to the next generation of Duquesne student leaders.
The meeting also featured a guest appearance from Sara Baron, Duquesne’s dean of libraries. She wanted to give a chance to explain more in-depth the upcoming renovations and subsequent closure of Gumberg Library’s fourth floor.
The major construction will begin in just six days, on Monday, March 3 and continue until students return for the fall semester.
To enter the library until then, students will have to enter in the southwest corner of the building, at the health services door.
Though this week’s meeting was light on senators, with midterms and spring break looming, they were once again able to extend their band of members.
Three new senators were sworn in at Wednesday’s meeting, Izzy Bond, Elsie Angeles and Ella Frank, all freshmen, but all ready to get more involved with student government.
SGA will meet next on March 12 at 5:30 p.m. in room 112 of the Student Union.
