Naomi’s Nook: 1/15

In the last couple months since I have written for my little column I have gained not one, but two little kitties.

Well, they are both edging on one-year-old, but they are babies to me. Despite my fears reflected in my last update. I went to some cat shelters, searched around and luckily found my little girls.

The Humane Society in East Liberty had recently gotten a fresh batch of felines when I went one day with my mom. Specifically, they had five girls from the same litter, all inflicted with K names like the Kardashians. The smallest of the girls, Kendall, immediately caught my eye. Mostly, because she was adorable, but also, she seriously resembled my old cat Parker. She had the same brown and orange coat on her back, with white paws and a white belly.

Kendall was a pretty nervous girl, just like Parker, but she seemed to like me, though she wasn’t too keen on letting me hold her (she still isn’t).

Since there were so many sisters, I met what some of the employees at the shelter considered to be the friendliest of all of the litter, a black and grey striped cat named Kathy. I very quickly decided to get both.

Kendall was just so nervous, but she reminded me too much of Parker. I couldn’t let her go to someone else. Kathy was a new kind of cat I hadn’t experienced before, a more relaxed cat.

When I brought them back to my house two days later I came up with my names for them. Kathy turned into Ramona, a nod to her rambunctious and curious nature (if you’ve ever seen “Ramona and Beezus”). My Ramona is smart, but she has an attitude.

Then the little one, Kendal, I named her Quinn, a name that, yes I got from “Glee” but that I have always found lovely and dainty for a little girl.

But don’t worry, they already got a couple nicknames, we call our little one “Quinnie,” and for Ramona, we tend to call her “Mo,” unless she does something bad enough to get the full name.

Though the shelter recommended we keep them separated for a couple weeks due to them being kept in separate cages, I wanted to see how introductions went at least.

The same day they became re-acclimated to each other they were sleeping together in the same box.

They are still learning some of the rules of the house, like not drinking out of human water glasses, staying off the table and scratching their scratching post instead of the living room furniture.

But, I love my girls. They seem like such a perfect match. It was certainly scary selecting new cats and I was worried over how it would all go, but everything seems to be going pretty well so far.

I still miss my Parker sometimes, but it’s nice to have cats around to comfort me whenever I need it.

Ramona and Quinn tend to spend most of their days in a cat tower my father bought them, and they seem to have made themselves at home.
