In the April 10, 2025, issue of The Duquesne Duke, reporters stated that “Duquesne University Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Gabe Welsch and Provost David Dausey did not respond to a request for comment” on student activity related to recent federal orders on immigration.
The request for that comment came on the same day as the paper was to be printed. While we certainly endeavor to answer reporters, it is not always possible on short notice. Nonetheless, the university takes these matters seriously and has been working assiduously to address these issues confronting all institutions of higher education.
Duquesne has made clear — in its first communication regarding immigration policy changes made by the federal government and in messages that have followed — that it intends to fully support our students and provide every assistance it may on a range of issues, in compliance with federal law. Subsequent communications with the general campus population, as well as other direct outreach and contact with international students on campus, continue to demonstrate the university taking action to provide information and other support for students affected directly and indirectly by federal policy.
Thank you for sharing this clarification.
Gabriel Welsch
Vice President of Marketing of Marketing and Communications at Duquesne University
