A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Locust Street between the Student Union and the parking garage on Wednesday morning. Two police cars could be seen parked along Locust Street and four police officers were on the scene.
Captain Jefferey Egan of the Duquesne Department of Public Safety said that the victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital by a Duquesne police car. Nobody else was hurt.
“Our Public Safety department immediately responded,” Vice President of Marketing and Communication Gabriel Welsch told The Duke. “The university strives to maintain a very safe campus environment and is known to be successful generally at doing so.”
Duquesne student Ella Anderson said that she did not see the incident, but that awkward angles make it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to safely navigate the road.
“It’s not great. I feel like people get frustrated and don’t really look,” she said.
Quinn Callahan has a car on campus, and said that a blind spot makes it difficult for her to see people at intersections.
Other students, like Alayna Fortenberry, don’t know if there is a feasible solution to the intersection.
“It’s kind of dangerous, but what can you do? There’s not much space,” she said.
Welsch said incidents like this prompt the university to consider improvements to safety.
The Department of Public Safety is still investigating the incident.
This is a developing story. This page will be updated as The Duke receives more information.
